Stockroom is the new home for the wealth of original and unique archival material held by Stockport Libraries. Documenting over 500 years of Stockport history, these archives are a gold mine of all things Stopfordian.
Spend time delving into the town’s rich history in the comfortable surrounds of Stockroom. All types of archive materials are held, including records created by organisations and institutions, businesses and trade associations, political parties, local schools and churches, as well as the personal papers of families and individuals.
Two of the biggest and most important collections are those of the Stockport Sunday School - once the largest Sunday School in the world - and the Christy’s Hat Works, one of the town’s biggest employers for 175 years.
The archive collection is complemented by a wide range of other resources such as books, historical newspapers, electoral registers, trade directories, council minutes, ephemera, illustrations and posters, plus many maps and plans. A large photograph collection of around 60,000 images charts the changing landscape of the town.
There is also an extensive set of family history reference guides to help you build your family tree. Free access is provided to the Ancestry and Find My Past websites, via our public computers.
