LGBT+ History Month: Delve into the Isherwood Archives Drop-in

FREE!

Friday 13 February 2026 - From 2:00pm

Join us for an open archive session offering a rare opportunity to explore the Isherwood Family archives up close.

To mark LGBT+ History Month, we’re shining a light on writer Christopher Isherwood. Born in High Lane in 1904, Isherwood became one of the most influential writers of the 20th century and an early figure of the Gay Liberation movement.

The Heritage Library is home to part of the Isherwood family collection, which offer a unique glimpse into the early life of the writer and his family history. Many of the items on display were studied by Isherwood himself while researching his family autobiography, Kathleen and Frank (1971).

Learn more about the writer's connection to Stockport and drop into the Archive Search Room any time between 2 and 5pm to get hands‑on with selected materials.

The session will be followed at 6pm by Come to the Cabaret, a talk by Isherwood expert Professor Andrew Biswell that will cover the major points in Isherwood’s life, with a focus on his origins in Stockport and his creative partnership with Don Bachardy.
