Heritage Open Day Stockport Stroll

Saturday 12 September 2026 - From 11:00am

Join Steve Marland from Modern Mooch for free Stockport Strolls as part of Stockroom's The Marvel from Marple exhibition programme and Heritage Open Day.

Each one-hour walk starts at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery, taking in several of the town's exceptional architectural sites, including Stopford House, the Hat Works and Alan Boyson's Merseyway car park screen. The walk will finish at Stockroom where you can view the Marvel from Marple exhibition, Alan Boyson's influential modernist artwork and learn more about Stockport and Merseyway's history.

This is a collaboration between Stockroom, Stockport War Memorial Gallery and the Hat Works as part of the Heritage Open Day and as part of the programme of events & activities surrounding The Marvel from Marple Exhibition. The Marvel from Marple is funded by the Henry Moore Foundation and Stockroom, and developed in partnership with Stockport Council and Sheffield Hallam University.

What does a session look like?

Where: The majority of the session is a walk through Stockport town, starting at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery and ending at Stockroom, taking in stops along the way.

When: There will be two walks taking around an hour each. The first starts at 11 am and the second starts at 2 pm.

Feel: These sessions will be relaxed, informative and a chance to find out more about the architecture and iconic buildings that shape the identity of the town. This is an outdoor event and is at the mercy of the weather. Please dress comfortably & accordingly. You will be welcomed at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery and led by Marland for the entire walk. Anybody & everybody is welcome to join, but please note that each walk will cross various terrain, steps and surfaces across Stockport.

Access: We cannot guarantee that the walk is wheelchair accessible, as it crosses various sections of Stockport Town, including the Stopford House Car Park and crossing various roads.
